MY

Story

...and the spiel

The Seed. Officially Planted.

In 2015 I married my bloke on the river flat in the family vineyard, Barossa Valley. It was a seriously fun day, and we worked for it. I took it upon myself to be chief dictator and style the event.

Both of us work in the wine industry so we had access to a plethora of items that most people would have to fork out for. This definitely helped our bottom line and gave us the ability to splurge on a few things that were really important to us - photography, catering, booze (!) and how we (well… ‘I’) dressed the tables.

The reception was outside, and my plan was to introduce us much colour as possible to reflect the environment, and the ‘Garden Party’ theme of the event. This was where I hit a major hurdle. Hire options for tableware textiles were limited, and what was available were dated, drab, and to be honest - boring! After spending months searching for options, I ended up dyeing and making all 150 napkins myself.

Afterward I thought I surely wasn't alone. There must be others wanting to introduce colour to their wedding, parties, and events. So I hopped on a plane with my brother in June 2017 to spend four days in downtown Denpasar checking out textile manufacturers, factories and sewing companies. I came home to my husband and daughter with a registered name and samples already progressing. Smashing Plates became alive - BRIGHT IS THE NEW WHITE.

What is IMPORTANT to me?

Fair Trade - Smashing Plates is 100% built on the consideration of fair trade so establishing a trustworthy and engaged team in Denpasar was a must. I work with small family owned businesses, and by doing so the money stays within these Indonesian families and communities.

Quality - Working with premium, quality fabric is very important to me. We all know how bad a scratchy poly/cotton napkin feels when you are daintily wiping your face. Smashing Plates tableware is made from 100% Damask Cotton.

Tablecloths

Smashing Plates tablecloth measurements are 135cm x 280cm - a typical 8-seater trestle table size. Currently there are three patterns, and a white option.

Napkins

All three Smashing Plates patterns along with white are available in 47cm x 47cm sized napkins. They are pre-pressed with a centre crease for easy folding.

Smashing Plates napkins are the perfect complement to a bursting floral arrangement, or a simple splash of colour to an undressed table.
